Editorial I Wrote Appearing in NJ Herald

Although they did edit out the part about the Star Ledger....................................... Editor, As a lifelong resident of Sussex County and long time subscriber to the New Jersey Herald, I am continually amazed at the letters published about the bear hunt on your editorial page. Knowing as I do of the general approval of Sussex County residents of the bear hunt, I guess you have to get your anti-bear hunt letters from Manhattan, Neptune Beach and Hoboken. Their children never had to stay in during recess because of a bear on the playground. They never had a neighbor whose goat or chickens or pony were mauled by bears. They never had a bear walk between them and their children in their backyard on a sunny summer day. They never saw a 500 lbs bear walk under their children's swing set. They do not get up at 5:30am to put the trash out because putting out the trash the night before would invite the bears in for a midnight snack. They never had the trash men bypass their garbage for the week because the bears got there in that short 1/2 hour. I bet they have bird feeders in their yard to attract birds. I bet they think feeding squirrels is a nice thing. I bet their trash cans are not a screwtop or a lock. Those of us that live in bear county have no problem with a neighbor shooting a 740 lb bruin. We never have to see it in our back yard again. Please publish letters from people who are representative of people that read your paper on a daily basis. If I want to hear what someone from Hoboken has to say, I will read the Star Ledger.
